Nice Large Antique Working Rare German Black Forest Deeply Carved Cuckoo Clock
We have a large number of vintage and antique clocks currently listed along with an equally impressive collection of music boxes and other very nice antique and vintage collectibles. Be sure to have a look at our. This is an excellent find of a beautiful, mechanical, very old, deeply carved, large cuckoo clock that was created about 115 years ago in the Black Forest of Germany. It’s not marked in any way which doesn’t really surprise me since it was not an international requirement until after 1920. The clock is ornately detailed, and is a great example of fine, wavy old-world carvings. It is one of the nicest antiques I’ve ever encountered and it has a remarkable blended dark mahogany finish! It is an impressive size too measuring about 16″ or so high (not counting the chains, weights or pendulum), about 7″ at its deepest point, and about 11 at its widest point. The clock is well preserved and carved the old world, high standard way from cured and aged Linden wood which is grown nearly exclusively at certain altitudes of the Alps and Black Forest. The clock front is designed to look like an intricate grape vine and adorned with five, ornately carved, large wooden grape leaves and vines; very nice! There is a stunning, beautifully carved, large wooden bird perched on a grape vine at the very top of the clock looking as though he is ready to take flight. The wooden dial has a black background featuring raised white Roman numerals to mark the hours and a pair of matching, fancy hands to point out the time. The numbers are the old style and individually nailed to the dial. The back door is wood too and is secured with two metal latches. It opens to allow access to the all metal, mechanical, rack style, weight driven movement. A weight driven movement simply means that the chains needs to be pulled occasionally to wind the clock and cuckoo activity. The tall wooden bellow or whistle tubes are intact with the old style, trapezoid shaped tops which still make good sound. At the bottom of the hour, a colorful wooden bird with flapping wings opens the wooden door above the wood dial and stands in the doorway. He gives off a single cuckoo sound in tandem with a coiled cathedral chime inside the case before retreating back inside the clock and closing the door. The bird reappears at the top of the hour and correctly cuckoos and chimes the current number of hours before going back inside and closing the door; absolutely fascinating! The clock works just fine here, keeps good time, and cuckoos well too. Keep in mind this is a very old clock and though it looks very nice, it is not new. It does show some signs of past maintenance but we don’t know the full service history. All cuckoo clocks need to be serviced regularly and we advise that you do so with any of your vintage or antique clocks at least once every three years. Doing so will preserve a classic clock like this one and keep it running strong for years to come. The clock comes complete as shown with two sets of attached metal chains, a grape leaf shaped wooden pendulum, and two very heavy pinecone shaped metal weights. I’ve looked the clock over fairly well and only found a nicely-done, old repair on the lower frame and no missing parts. It shows quite well and is just breathtaking on display! This clock is a wonderful look back at the greatness of German clock workmanship and is certain to capture the imagination of anyone seeing or hearing it in your home, office or wherever it is that you care to showcase a unique, mechanical Black Forest timepiece with a solid history behind it. If you like this item and I’m sure you do, then I know you’ll love the other items. Check back frequently since we’re listing a lot of antique/vintage items as time allows! We’d be glad to send more pictures if available; just ask! My wife and I have been accumulating lots of nice antiques and other collectors items over the years. But now is a good time to start clearing out the things we no longer wish to keep. We do all that we can to accurately describe each item to the best of our ability. Be sure to add commits to your favorites list.

This antique Dufa German Wall clock would make a great addition to any home. It is a lovely piece and I think you will enjoy it very much. Whether you’re looking for a functional timepiece or a decorative accent, this hanging wall clock is just for you! Please carefully examine the pictures as they form the main portion of the description of this clock. But I will say that before I was even done cleaning it it started running and that is generally a really good sign also it wasn’t particularly dirty i. The brass was pretty much gold colored still not covered over with gunk and oil and grease. Think that this is a wonderful clock and I would certainly keep it if I had more room in my home. As such it is time for it to come and be with you and your family. The movement and case have both been cleaned and serviced. I do not take all the patina off of the brass you can do that if you would like to. Every attempt will be made to package the clock carefully so that it arrives to you intact and in it’s current working condition.

From my research, I believe this to be a very early example of an Oswald rolling eye clock. However, there is no brand marking on the clock, just the patent location U. And date of Aug 31, 1926, along with the words In- U. The clock is 6″ in height and 6″ in length. This clock has its original screws but is missing the winding key. The other knob on the back turns smoothly and adjusts the dog’s right eye. I could not get the clock to wind, but I didn’t want to risk breaking or damaging anything on the antique clock, and suggests that this clock be serviced by a professional to return it to full functionality.
